Rome is at the centre of the Italian railway system. Most of the trains going from North to South or vice versa stop here. It will be easy then to find a train ticket for Rome but pay attention to the fares. ES (which stands for Euro Star) trains are much more expensive than Inter City or Inter Regionali. The obvious difference is the journey time. From Rome you can have day trips to wonderful cities such as Naples or Florence, just to name the most famous, because with an ES train you get there in respectively 70 and 95 minutes. Euro Stars’ journey time from Milan is 3 hours, from Turin 4, from Venice 3 hours and 30 minutes. If you can’t fly, Rome has got direct trains for France – Paris, Austria – Vienna, and Germany – Munich.
