The Christmas Holidays have officially started with today’s Immaculate Conception Holiday and Rome’s entertainment scene is bustling with dance performances and music events. Let’s have a round up of the most interesting shows running until January 7.
As far as we know, the first Christmas concert of the season will be held at Auditorium Conciliazione on the 13th. It is a gospel night by the Howard Gospel Choir and the great blues man Eddie Floyd.
Also on December 16, a free Christmas concert for violin and organ with music by Bach and Mozart will be performed at the church of S.Anna in the Vatican.
On the 17th you’ll have a triple choice of free Christmas concerts. The at the Goethe Institut, the German language and culture organization, where 3 Italian and 4 German musicians will mix jazz, Christmas melodies and Middle Eastern music. At 8:30pm.
The second, in a totally different area of the city, will be held by the Choir association Benedetto Marcello in the church of Natività di Maria, in Via di Bravetta 633 at 9pm. They will a typical Christmas repertoire.
This choir will hold another free event on the 18th in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Via Lata, in the end of Via del Corso towards Piazza Venezia, at 9pm.
Christmas Notes, a solo, choir and orchestra concert by the association Clivis will start at 7pm. In the Ss.XII Apostoli church, near Piazza Venezia, in Via del Vaccaro 9.
But December 18 also features a very peculiar event: the Play Toy Orchestra concert at the Tor Bella Monaca theatre. This is the only orchestra in the world that only plays toy instruments. In cooperation with the Accademia Filarmonica Romana.
Nothing on the 19th, I am afraid. Very rich program on December 20. The Blue Notes Choir joins another 4 choirs for Rome’s official Christmas concert at the Rome’s University La Sapienza’s Main Hall at 8:30 om. Free Event
The 20th also marks the start of the Auditorium’s Gospel Festival. A classic here in Rome, after 15 consecutive editions. Until December 31 you can hear some of the best gospel bands, including the Harlem Jubilee Singers, the Brown Sisters and Crystal Aikin.
The 21st features two special events. At Auditorium Conciliazione some of Italy’s best known voices such as Bennato, al Bano, Baccini, Dolcenera, Ruggeri will perform a charity Christmas concert for the kids of Kijange, Burundi. At 8:45 pm.
In the church of Santa Maria della Consolazione there will be a Renaissance and Baroc music concert of Christmas Mass melodies. At 9pm. Free.
On the 26th, not only you will have the Gospel performance at the Auditorium (the Anthony Morgan’s inspirational choir of Harlem with a double performance: one in the morning, the second in the evening) but also at the Casa del Jazz by the World Spirit Orchestra choir.
On January 5 and 6 you’ll have the chance to listen to Italian folk Christams music. Concert by Ambrogio Sparagna at the Auditorium.
Finally dance! What’s the most typical dance show of the Christmas season? The Nutcracker, of course.
You can first see it performed by the Freeballet company on December 18 at Teatro delle Emozioni. From December 21 to the 30th (no shows on December 25 & 26) it will be Teatro dell’Opera‘s turn. Then, from January 4 to the 7th it will be on stage at Auditorium Conciliazione (double show on the the 6th: at 5pm and 9pm).
