2012 Valentine’s Day in Rome: Tips for a Very Romantic February 14 in the Eternal City!

2012 Valentine’s Day in Rome: Tips for a Very Romantic February 14 in the Eternal City!

Why shoud you ever spend Valentine’s day in Rome? Just because it is one of the most beautiful cities on earth and as such inspires love feelings? Well, that is a very good reason for enjoying a long weekend in Rome, but there may also be other interesting considerations to make.

Valentine was a bishop here in Rome and according to some, the tradition started when he helped a fighting couple to make peace with a rose and some wise words. Valentine then became a saint and his grave (actually a catacomb) is in Rome. According to others, in ancient Rome, during the reign of the emperor Claudius II, many marriages were cancelled to convince men to leave their cities and join war, but Valentine secretly celebrated new marriages and when he was found out, he was sentenced to death on February 14, 270 AD.

In any case, February 14 had always had a special relationship with love in ancient Rome. It was a holiday to honour the goddess of Women and Marriage and on February 15 the Fertility Festival started.

But let’s get back to our times and have a look at the romantic stuff couples can do in and around Rome from February 10 to February 19.

February 19?? Yes, it might sound weird but in Terni, a city in Umbria but very close to Rome by train whose patron is Saint Valentine, they hold a marathon on Sunday the 19th dedicated to lovers, that follows a very romantic route along valleys, lakes and water falls! (for other events and activities in Umbria check out this article)

And what about the 10th, isn’t it a bit too early? Not for the Eat, Pray, Love in Rome 2 night-3 day tour package by Italian Glamourous Services. Following the success of the book and the movie, they propose to discover Rome through an itinerary off the beaten track, cocoon yourself in one of the most elegant spas in the city, indulge in the delectables specialties cooked in the coolest Italo/French restaurants in the city and fall asleep in the charme of a boutique hotel signaled by the renown Louis Vuitton Guide. Until February 15.

Nor for Shakespeare and his admirers: at Teatro Eliseo the quintessence of Romanticism Romeo and Juliet (in Italian) will be on stage until February 12.

Another Romeo and Juliet show will be on stage from February 14 to the 26th at Teatro Ghione.

On February 12 you can find a good choice of presents for your loved one in the “Waiting for Valentine’s day market” in Bracciano, a nice city overlooking a lake with a beautiful castle, only an hour away from Rome by train.

A different celebration will be carried out by bikers in the Sabina area. From breakfast to lunch the MotoClub Valli Sabine will show you the most romantic places of this province from a bike on Sunday the 12th.

And we have finally come to the actual Valentine’s day, Tuesday the 14th.

During the day you might want to take advantage of the fact that couples can enter state monuments and museums paying just one ticket. For a complete list of places applying the “For Valentine’s Day Fall In Love With Art” special tariff in Rome and surroundings, look here. I suggest Galleria Borghese (my favorite museum in Rome), the Roman Forum and the Colosseum (the very heart of Rome), the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica (recently restored and renovated) and the nearby Museo Nazionale Etrusco (with the most romantic sculpture of a couple from the past: the Sarcophagus of the Spouses).

Don’t forget thatthis year Valentine’s Day falls in the middle of Carnival, therefore in the afternoon you might want to consider that in Piazza del Poplo there is a Grand Ball from 6:15pm.

For the evening, the TramJazz crew proposes a special night literally off the beaten track, which means in a real, stable venue, and not on top of their tram, with 1940s jazz love songs! If you want to know more about this romantic candle-light dinner on a historical tram in the heart of Rome (all year except February 14!), read our story.

Live music and dinner is the offer at the Place. For the 14th they designed a special menu and organized a concert by the Retro’ Band with the best old love songs.

You can have a romantic dinner while enjoying a fantastic panoramic view of Rome at the Zodiaco – a must for Roman couples – on top of the Monte Mario hill. They have a special Valentine’s day dinner for this special occasion.

Two very original dinners (with optional overnight stay) will take place on Valentine’s day in two castles just out of Rome: the Castelluccia Castle, along the Via Cassia (north of Rome) and the Orsini Castle.

Micca Club features a special Valentine’s day dancing event for singles: it’s Love Potion. From 10pm.

The Theatre Arciliuto, instead, proposes a dinner with burlesque show with Lady Burlesque on Tour.

And what is Rome’s most romantic kissing location? The Gianicolo hill, of course!
