Christmas Shopping in Rome: a Review of the Best Markets & Bazaars

The economic crisis is still hitting hard our wallets, but everyone buys gits for Christmas. We know sales will slow from last year and that people will pay even more attention to bargains and reasonable prices, that’s why for the first time we decided to devote a whole post to Christmas markets, a good destination for products with a good quality/price ratio. Happy shopping!

One full month before Christmas, Rome’s most famous season Market, in Navona square, is already open! A fixture of the Roman Christmas shopping for the last 100 years, it is open every day until 1am. It mostly features sweet and toy stalls and can boast of a nice old-style merry-go-round. Particularly crowded on January 6 for the Epiphany holiday [1].

This Friday and Saturday, the Swedish church of Rome has set up a market with Christmas decorations and Swedish food [2].

From December 1 to January 6, outside the Auditorium/Parco della Musica there is a Christmas village, with many activities especially geared for children such as the ice-skating rink, and a historical merry-go-round. For shopaholics there is a rather exclusive Christmas Fair with an interesting range of sophisticated crafts on sale. The Auditorium’s Christmas Village also features over 30 food and sweet stalls, lots of performances and season’s music concerts, exhibitions and puppet shows [3].

If you want to feel the Central European atmosphere, the Christmas market of the Austrian Culture Institute of December 1st is an ideal event [4]. But also the December 2 market by the German community of Rome at their church of Santa Maria dell’Anima is a valid option [5]. Morning only.

For the afternoon of December 2 we recommend you to visit the Winter bazaar of the American Overseas School of Rome [6].

The international school Ambrit has organized a Holiday Bazaar on December 7 with a good selection of used and handmade products [7].

Not far from the Auditorium, the Tor di Quinto area will feature the Reve de Noel Christmas market on December 7-9 in a shabby chic style, at the Ice Park skating rink [8].

“Artisans under the tree” is a great occasion to find your Christmas tree and the presents! Hand made products and beautiful season plants will be on sale at this covered Christmas market in northern Rome from December 14 to the 16th [9].

The local market in Piazza Conca d’Oro will have a special Christmas twist from December 18 to January 6 [10].

Finally a tip if you want to combine a Christmas market tour with a trip to a lovely village near Rome. On December 15 & 16 the medieval center of Sacrofano (see these 3 beautiful photos from our picture gallery) will host its 2012 Christmas market, with hot chocolate tasting and shows too [11].
