What’s Open (& When) in Rome During the 2012 Christmas Holidays

We don’t know for what reasons but many of our readers think that Rome shuts down for the Christmas holidays. No way, that’s totally wrong! If you want to know what you can do/see on days such as Christmas or January 1 etc… continue reading our story.
During the Christmas holidays museums, archeological areas, monuments and exhibition venues make some changes to their opening days and hours. But there is not even a single day without some major landmark open for you, Rome fans and visitors J.
Further updates may arrive in the next few days.
 
DECEMBER 24 and DECEMBER 31
General rule: all closed. Open institutions will close a few hours ahead of the usual schedule.
Exceptions:
The Colosseum, Roman Forums and Palatine hill are open as usual until dusk. The same holds for Caracalla’s baths.
The sculpture museum Andersen is open as usual until 7:30pm. [1]
The Vatican Museums (which include the Sistine Chapel, for those of you who don’t know it) are open until 2pm.
The Ethnographic Museum Pigorini in the EUR area is open until 6pm.
Villa Adriana in Tivoli is open until 5pm.
MAXXI is open from 11am to 5:30pm. [2]
 
Exhibitions: Akbar until 2pm, Vermeer until 3pm, Doisneau until 3pm, Guttuso until 3:30pm, Brueghel until 6pm.
 
 
DECEMBER 25
General rule: all closed. Some museums/monuments exhibition centres open in the afternoon
Exceptions:
The first showings to open on Christmas day is Akbar at 3pm. Open until 8pm.
Guttuso 3:30pm-8:30pm. Vermeer and Doisneau 4pm-8pm.
The last exhibit to close is Brueghel’s: 9pm. It opens at 4pm.
The Etruscan museum (now featuring an exhibition about amber) is open from 8am to 2pm.
The Ethnographic Museum Pigorini in the EUR area is open from 8am to 1:30pm on Christmas. On the opposite side of the square the Italian Folk Museum is open as usual from 9am to 8pm. [3]
The Asian Art museum is open from 9am to 2pm.
On January 1st, MAXXI is open from 11am to 10pm.
Villa Adriana in Tivoli is open from 8am to 2pm. In Tivoli you can also visit Villa D’Este, the other UNESCO world heritage site in this little town north-east of Rome, from 9:30am to 3:30pm
 
 
DECEMBER 26
General rule: standard opening hours.
Exceptions:
The Vatican Museums are closed.
MAXXI is open from 11am to 10pm.
 
 
DECEMBER 31
General Rule: Same as December 24.
Exception: Ostia’s archaeology site is open from 8:30am to 4:30pm.
 
 
JANUARY 1
General Rule: Same as December 25.
Exceptions:
The National Gallery of Modern Art and its Paul Klee exhibition will be open from 1:30pm to 7:30pm.
The Ethnographic Museum Pigorini in the EUR area is open from 1:45pm to 7:45pm on January 1st.
 
 
JANUARY 6
General rule: standard opening hours.
Exception: MAXXI is open from 11am to 10pm.
