After the coldest and rainiest month in decades, April eventually marks the start of the warm season. The crazy times of Benedict XVI’s resignation and Bergoglio’s unexpected election are now over and we can again focus on lighter events and happenings.
The most Roman event of the month is the city’s birthday. According to the legend Rome was founded on April 21st. It was the year 753 BC. The city government of Rome organizes many free events. This year’s calendar is not ready yet but you can have preview, reading this post about last year’s celebrations.
Another moment of sheer Roman spirit will take place on April 8. It’s the soccer derby, i.e. Rome’s two top teams, As Roma and Lazio, play against each other at the Olympic Stadium. Very emotional moment for the city’s soccer fans.
It’s a religious event but it really has to do with Rome’s history. It’s Pope Francis Mass for the possession of the chair of the Bishop of Rome in St John’s Lateran, the original seat of the Catholic church. On April 7 at 5:20pm.

Tango lovers will definitely enjoy the Rome Tango Festival from April 26 to May 5.
An Indian classical dance show, Bharatanatyam, will be on stage on April 5 in the very central via Celsa.
The Nordic Film Fest will offer you a range of movies from the Scandinavian countries from April 11. Free screenings at Casa del Cinema.
Empire State of Art, the contemporary art exhibition by New York’s living artists, is bound to be a seminal event for Rome. The Big Apple’s most famous daily newspaper, the New York Times, is jealous of this showing and wondered why it hasn’t been done in NYC yet…. From April 23.
A one-off, extraordinary event for contemporary art lovers will take place on April 19. It’s the Free Friday tour of Rome’s top commercial galleries by the fantastic and passionate staff of Rome Gallery Tours. Availability for 5 people only. Hurry up, it’s free of charge!
Pet lovers can’t miss the second edition of Cats in show on April 6 & 7. At Spazio 900, EUR borough.
Vintage car fans will enjoy the April 13-14 week-end thanks to Fuoriserie, the old and vintage car fair at the Rome Fair.

First of all it’s Open House Roma time on May 4 & 5. This is one of the coolest events of the year that you shouldn’t miss for any reason. On May 18 it’s the Night of Museums. Free access and concerts in museums throughout Rome from 8pm.

From May 3, the winning pictures of the 2013 edition of World Press Photo, the most important photo-journalism contest, will be at the Rome Trastevere Museum until the end of the month.
