It’s Finally Spring! The Best April Events in Rome

After the coldest and  rainiest month in decades, April eventually marks the start of the warm season. The crazy times of Benedict XVI’s resignation and Bergoglio’s unexpected election are now over and we can again focus on lighter events and happenings.

The most Roman event of the month is the city’s birthday. According to the legend Rome was founded on April 21st. It was the year 753 BC. The city government of Rome organizes many free events. This year’s calendar is not ready yet but you can have preview, reading this post about last year’s celebrations.

Another moment of sheer Roman spirit will take place on April 8. It’s the soccer derby, i.e. Rome’s two top teams, As Roma and Lazio, play against each other at the Olympic Stadium. Very emotional moment for the city’s soccer fans.

It’s a religious event but it really has to do with Rome’s history. It’s Pope Francis Mass for the possession of the chair of the Bishop of Rome in St John’s Lateran, the original seat of the Catholic church. On April 7 at 5:20pm.

Sinead O’ Connor in concert at Rome’s Auditorium on April 7 with her Crazy Baldhead Tour.

Patti Smith’s Festival, “My Festival” kicks off on April 9 to celebrate the first decade of Rome’s Auditorium. The concerts will feature the US singer and other artists. Runs through April 25.

Tango lovers will definitely enjoy the Rome Tango Festival from April 26 to May 5.

An Indian classical dance show, Bharatanatyam, will be on stage on April 5 in the very central via Celsa.

The Nordic Film Fest will offer you a range of movies from the Scandinavian countries from April 11. Free screenings at Casa del Cinema.

Empire State of Art, the contemporary art exhibition by New York’s living artists, is bound to be a seminal event for Rome. The Big Apple’s most famous daily newspaper, the New York Times, is jealous of this showing and wondered why it hasn’t been done in NYC yet…. From April 23.

A one-off, extraordinary event for contemporary art lovers will take place on April 19. It’s the Free Friday tour of Rome’s top commercial galleries by the fantastic and passionate staff of Rome Gallery Tours. Availability for 5 people only. Hurry up, it’s free of charge!

Public redesigned flats, architecture studios, buildings and yards open for you to show the real state of the art of architecture in Rome. Guided tours. Booking required. Free of charge.
