September 2013: the Best Events in Rome and Surroundings

globetheatreYou can still feel summer in Rome during September. Hot sunny days are the rule. Schools start in the middle of the month and until that time the city looks pretty lazy and quiet. The atmosphere is relaxed and nights are refreshing enough.

It is not a coincidence that September is a peak month in Rome. Here’s our selection of some of the most interesting events going on during this end-of-summer month.

The very first day of September, a Sunday, offers an incredible choice of food festivals around Rome. If you love it hot and spicy, Rieti and its Chilli Festival should be your destination.

Not far from Rieti, is Amatrice, where the famous pasta sauce Amatriciana (tomato, guanciale and pecorino) originates from. The Amatriciana Festival runs through September 1.

If you prefer meat, Ariccia and its Porchetta Fair will also greet you this Sunday.

The first Sunday of the month also offers you an interesting cinema happening in town: it’s the screening of the Locarno Film Festival movies. In original version with Italian subtitles.

The other key film appointments of the month are the Japanese Movie Season devoted to the country’s best actors from September 12 and the Turkish Film Festival on September 26-29 – both free of charge.

A very unusual and interesting event is the European Space Expo through September 6: a good occasion to learn more about the outer sphere. Free admission.

The only open theatre during the summer is the Globe Theatre with its wooden structure and Shakespeare’s plays. Richard III through the 8th, King Lear from the 12th. Both in Italian.

It’s an unusually quiet moth for our music scene in September: the only major concert we are aware of is by the US rock star David Byrne & St. Vincent on the 11th at the Music Auditorium.

From September 15 to 22 the same venue will host the Brazil Festival with a performance by Tocquinho on the 15th.

Only a couple of good exhibitions kick off in September: Visual China, about Chinese contemporary painting from September 4 (free entrance) and The Great Adventure, about National Geographic’s first 125 years – photography.

It’s called OktoberFest but it actually mainly takes place in September in Munich and also in Rome. Our local version is at the race track of Capannelle, in southern Rome, throughout the month.

TechCrunch Italy will be in Rome on September 26 and 27, hosted by MAXXI. An enlightening event on the latest digital developments with lots of international guests and technology gurus.

But the last days of the month will be an arts feast.

On the 28th, many state-owned museums will be open until midnight for the Notte al Museo happening.

On the 28th and the 29th monuments, archaeology areas and museums will be open for free. It’s Heritage Days.

Finally, on the 27th and on the 29th , the last Sunday of the month, the Vatican Museums will let visitors in for free.
