After Easter and the pilgrims invasion due to the Popes Canonization Rome should go back to normal business in May. As usual, this is our favorite month of the year to enjoy/visit our city with long, sunny days and warm temperatures; and here is a wrap-up of the best events beginning in May that we are aware of, so far.

May 1 – The month always starts with the San Giovanni free concert attended by huge crowds and starring Italian musicians mostly but also some International icons. It takes place in the central Piazza San Giovanni from around 3pm and it is sponsored by Italy’s major Trade Unions to celebrate International Workers’ Day. This year’s stars are: Piero Pelù, the Tiromancino band and the Modena City Ramblers.
May 7 – The Brazilian artist Caetano Veloso is back in town after four years for his Abracaco Tour 2014 and will play in the Conciliazione Auditorium.
May 10 – Top American jazz piano player Chick Corea will delight the crowds in Rome’s Auditorium.
May 11 – Ben Harper will perform in Rome for his acoustic Tour that started last November in California. Rome’s Auditorium.
May 22 Steve Hackett in the Eternal City with his Genesis’ Extended World Tour 2014. Conciliazione Auditorium. Sold out!
ARTS & EXHIBITIONS
May 1 – Free museums, monuments and landmarks. 29 in Rome! Perfect day-trip from Rome: Tivoli with free access to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Villa D’Este (Renaissance) and Villa Adriana (Ancient Rome).
May 2 – The Rome Trastevere Museum hosts as usual the exhibition of World Press Photo, the most important international photo-journalism competition. Until May 23.
May 10 – Our favorite event of the month, Open House Roma opens the doors of private houses, offices, buildings and monuments with high architectural/design profile. A week-end full of free visits all over the city! Booking required for some sites.
May 17 – Museum at Night is really worth a visit to Rome, the city with one of the highest concentration of museums and landmarks.
OUTDOOR & SPORT
May 10 – Tennis lovers can’t miss the Internazionali d’Italia tournament, Italy’s most important competition. Through May 18.
May 16 – Vintage car buffs will already know this fantastic event, one of the world’s oldest car races that reaches Rome for one night and one morning every year. It’s the Mille Miglia and you can see for free 350 very expensive old cars from all over the world passing by you! From 10:30pm.
May 22 – Rome’s most important horse event is the Piazza di Siena show jumping race. Through May 25 inside the Villa Borghese Park.
CINEMA & SHOWS
May 1 – The Cinecittà studios show off with Ave Cinecittà, an ancient Rome-themed visit to the studios reproducing Imperial Rome. Through May 4.
May 8 – The very central Farnese Movie Theater hosts the Spanish Movie Fest. Six days of Spanish films in downtown Rome!
May 25 – The British comedian Bill Bailey will come to Rome for his one-night show Qualmpeddlar at the Parioli theater.
FOOD & DRINK
May 23 – The Italian Beer Festival will take place in EUR. Three days of home-brewed ales from all over the country.
May 29 – The Gelato Festival is much more than delicious scoops, it is also about the craft of making good gelato with seminars, workshops and tastings. In Rome’s Auditorium.
